NM MOST and Patients and Families

Advance care planning allows individuals and their families the ability to have a voice in the type of treatment they receive or don’t receive.¬† When a patient has a written advance directive that is followed by their healthcare providers the end result is that the patient receives the type of care that is consistent with their values, family members are spared the stress of not knowing what a patient would want, and healthcare facilities can ensure that precious healthcare resources are utilized correctly.¬† This process is especially critical when a person has a serious or life-limiting illness.
